Chelsea vs.Manchester United

Sir Alex Ferguson has promised Wayne Rooney and Michael Owen at least 45 minutes each, but elsewhere he is being forced to improvise. Patrice Evra, Michael Carrick, Rio Ferdinand, Gabriel Obertan and both Da Silva brothers will all sit out Sunday's game.

Didier Drogba will start on the bench for Chelsea, who have Petr Cech, Alex and Jose Bosingwa missing. New faces Yossi Benayoun will start on the bench, while the signing of Brazilian midfielder Ramires will probably not be completed in time for him to feature tomorrow.

For Manchester United, all eyes will be on Mexican striker Javi Hernandez, who has impressed in pre-season. Chris Smalling also looks like he will be thrown in for his first competitive start since his £10 million move from Fulham.

Touchline duel: Sir Alex Ferguson v Carlo Ancelotti

Battle rejoined. Both Ferguson and Ancelotti are far too seasoned ever to use phrases like 'putting down a marker' or 'sending a message', but in a duel that is as much psychological as tactical, there remains a frisson of electricity between the two. Fergie made the first move by labelling Chelsea as the team to beat this season. Expect another nine months of this.

Key battle: Nicolas Anelka v Nemanja Vidic

With Rio Ferdinand absent, the task of marshaling the back line falls to Vidic, for whom this is a pivotal season. The Serb was exposed more often than he was accustomed to last campaign, and the pace of Nicolas Anelka will be an early test of his match fitness, given that he only returned to the side in Dublin on Wednesday.

Turf wars

Michael Owen blamed the relaid Wembley turf for the injury he suffered during last season's League Cup final. Since then, the pitch has been relaid twice more, but Wembley officials are again hopeful the latest surface will be the end of flying divots. The new pitch is made from Desso turf, which mixes artificial fibres with real grass and, it is hoped, will cut up less. The new surface gets its first outing on Sunday.
